Review: Virtue by William Ryan Key

Based in Jacksonville, Florida, you may know William Ryan Key best as the ex-frontman of the American pop-punk group Yellowcard. November 30th, 2018 marks the release date of his newest EP Virtue, since his previous EP released in May 2018, Thirteen. Virtue consists of a track listing of six songs and was released through The Lone Tree Records.

As much as we would like to hold on to the hope of a Yellowcard reunion, Key has taken up to explore his own personal genre, leaving behind his band days. One of the main tracks includes Downtown (Up North), which was published to YouTube this October 5th. The single was widely praised for its sentimental lyrics yet the beautiful tune of the acoustic guitar and a surprise appearance of rhythmic cello played by Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer. There is an obvious raw emotion into the songwriting process as a love story unfolds. Virtue showcases Key’s newfound confidence and sound as a solo artist. “With Virtue, I wanted to explore and expand on the sound I’ve discovered both musically and lyrically.” He has stated and definitely owned up to his words.

The first track, The Same Destination, starts off the EP with an impressive piano melody which quickly enchants the listener. This establishes a sense of direction of the overall EP which is ideally concluded with the track, No More, No Less. With his second EP this year, Key manages to release a written collection of songs with a stripped down beginning yet as it gets to the chorus the musicality grows fuller. William Ryan Key has definitely shown he does not need a band behind him to be successful but just his bare passion.
