Justin Courtney Pierre @ The Bowery Ballroom

Justin Courtney Pierre has released his first solo album In The Drink since the indefinite hiatus of Motion City Soundtrack in 2016. He’s on tour now supported by Pronoun, and joined by his touring band mates Shannon Burns of Forecast on bass, David Jarnstrom on drums, Lydia Liza on Guitar, and Tommy “The Mad Scientist” Rehbein of Robosapien on guitar. Justin began the show with the opening track of In The Drink, “Undone”, followed by the rest of the album consecutively up until “Sooner”. Justin’s demeanor with the crowd is earnest and casual. He admits that he wants to give everyone their money’s worth for tickets and just playing his new album isn’t quite long enough to do that so they play a few songs from one of his side projects he did with Tommy, Farewell Continental. The rest of the band leaves temporarily for Justin to play some stripped down acoustic versions of three Motion City Soundtrack songs. He confessed it would have felt weird to play these songs with a band other than his MCS band mates and that’s one of the reasons he chose to do them solo. It was really quite touching and sweet, considering how special all of their music has been to them and their fans. “Stand Too Close”, “When “You’re” Around””, and “L.G. Fuad” were the songs he chose to play and the crowd passionately sang along. The band joins him back on stage to close out the show with the rest of In The Drink concluding with “Goodnight Hiroyuki”. Justin’s notorious, emotive lyricism from his past work with Motion City Sountrack is alive and well in his new work.
