The first ever Houston Open Air is arriving in Houston in about a month away and Houston is in for a treat. Danny Wimmer Presents, the festival production company responsible for the biggest rock festivals in the country including Rock on the Range, Carolina Rebellion, Northern Invasion and more, is bringing a rock festival to Houston. We had a chance to sit down and talk with Gary Spivack, Executive Vice President for Danny Wimmer Presents’ and the man responsible for getting the biggest names in rock and metal to play in festivals. We talked about life in Danny Wimmer, producing festivals and the importance of building relationships with sponsorships.
In your own opinion, what is the most challenging part of your job? And why?
GETTING THE RIGHT BANDS, AT THE RIGHT PRICE, AT THE RIGHT TIMES, everything has to be just right!! And also to get the right bands to play at the right cities
How do you maintain & handle a balance between traveling on the road to your family life?
I think I was born into the music industry and in a way, this career chooses me and my family understands my career and what being in this career involves.
When booking new and up & coming talent, what are some certain key things you look for when a band performs live on stage? What to look for and what to notice to know who the best bands are.
GOOD SONGS, GOOD PERSONALITY, GOOD MUSICIANS, BOTTOM LINE: THEY CANNOT SUCK!
Who is your favorite band to perform live?
U2, RADIOHEAD, METALLICA, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, TOOL, etc
Other than it being one of the largest metropolitan cities, why here in Houston?
With how diverse of a city Houston is, we couldn’t believe it’s not a rock and roll destination so I think it’s time we turn Houston into one. And now with Houston Open Air, we do!
Can you give any advice or tips on how to go about obtaining the some of the top name brand Sponsorships you have been fortunate to obtain? .And what are some key elements to maintain such good business relationships?
We produced rock and roll events and the right sponsors have to represent that lifestyle. Certain sponsors don’t make sense so we have to make sure to get the right sponsors for the right events.
