BN Interview: Firestarter

From playing the Main Stage at the Vans Warped Tour to embarking on a tour with Capstan this month, we caught up with pop punk band, Firestarter, to talk about it all.

How did you guys meet and get together to form Firestarter?

When Firestarter initially started, I (Matthew LaPerche/singer & guitarist) had just moved up to the Albany area for a fresh start after some time in Connecticut. I began to write our first EP, New Beginnings, and while doing so I began working where I met our drummer also named Matt and yes, it gets confusing. Our two other original members who are no longer with us we had met through mutual friends in the Albany area.

Firestarter played the Syracuse Warped Tour stop, how was that? What was your favorite part of the whole experience?

Playing Warped Tour on the main stage was an absolute dream come true! Back in 2014, we had the chance to play the Massachusetts date, so returning to Warped was an awesome feeling especially so close to home. Our favorite aspect of this year was being able to connect with our upstate fans on a bigger stage as well as bring our name and music to a whole new crowd that may have not heard of us. We had several people come up to us and say that we were their first ever Warped set and that was such incredible feeling.

What makes Firestarter stand out from the rest of the bands in the industry?

We honestly pride ourselves on our work ethic, perseverance, and honestly our downright stubbornness. We’ve been a band for a little over 3 years now and in that time have put out multiple releases, gone on over 10 tours, and been able to do so much we didn’t think was possible. Through everything we keep pushing for more and better things. Earlier this year Matt and myself were a day away from calling it the quits after we had a rough spout of member departures, but now we are back on the road seeing the country once again and it’s a great feeling.

You guys are heading out on tour with Capstan, how excited are you guys for this run and to be seeing new places? Anything we can expect to see at your shows?

We are extremely excited to be sharing the road with our friends in Capstan. They just put out an incredible new EP and hold it down in Florida so it’s gonna be a blast. On this tour, we return to a lot of places we have been in the past but we are looking forward to some Midwestern cities and states we haven’t played like Indianapolis as well. Definitely expect a good mix of songs from all of our releases including a yet to be released song from our upcoming new record!

What are some musical influences that can be heard on A Life Consistent? How was it working with Jay Maas?

All of us really hit our strides in our musical interests in the mid-2000’s with the boom in emo punk, screamo, and post-hardcore bands like Silverstein, Bayside, Senses Fail, Armor for Sleep, Underoath, etc and we feel that comes out heavily in the songs on the EP. Working with Jay was absolute pleasure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience and final product!

How does the writing process go about when writing your new record? Any particular headspace you guys were in when writing and recording A Life Consistent?

When it comes to writing, we are definitely a go with the flow and let things come out naturally kind of a band. One of us will bring a riff or even full song skeleton, we build off of them together, and keep working on them until we are all 100% with the final product. When we were writing that EP, we wanted it to serve a bridge to the gap between our old material vs. the newer direction we were heading as a band with the heavy influence from mid-2000’s post-hardcore and screamo.

What advice would you give to unsigned bands?

Plain and simple. Work hard, never give up when it seems all the odds are stacked against you, and be true to yourselves as a person and a musician. In time someone will see that and take notice.

Lastly, what message would you like to give to your fans and our readers?

Come catch us on a date of the Capstan tour all of August and be sure to keep an eye out for new music from us soon!
